How to Seal Butcher Block Tops

Butcher block tops are beautiful to look at but require regular maintenance to retain their beauty. Like all wood products, the butcher block surface will need to be sealed before it is used in the kitchen for food preparation and to protect it from spills and stains. Sealing butcher block tops can be done in less than a day, and the seal can be preserved easily with daily cleanup. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

In a bowl or container, measure equal amounts of mineral oil and mineral spirits. Start with 1/2 cup of each and add more as needed.

    2

Dip a clean, soft cloth into the mineral oil mixture and wipe the butcher block surface with the oil, following the grain of the wood.

    3

Allow the surface to absorb the oil and dry.

    4

Reapply a second coat of the mineral oil mixture to the butcher block top and let dry.

    5

Continue to apply coats until the wood no longer absorbs the oil mixture.

    6

Wipe the excess oil from the butcher block with a clean, dry cloth. Allow the butcher block to dry overnight before use.

    7

Reapply a coat or two of the mineral oil mixture to the butcher block any time you ding the wood with a knife or use soap to clean up a spill.
