Flowers for a Centerpiece

Flowers for a Centerpiece

When you are hosting a special event, whether it's a family holiday dinner, wedding or other special occasion, table centerpieces are an extension of the dcor and theme of the affair. The use of seasonal or rare flowers in a centerpiece provides you with a stunning display and can spark interesting conversations among your guests.

Spring Flowers

Centerpieces made up of spring flowers are especially beautiful additions to springtime weddings or Mother's Day brunches. For your springtime wedding reception, incorporate the same flowers used by the wedding party into the reception centerpieces. For instance, if the bridal bouquet consists of cream-colored roses, use these same flowers as the focal point of the centerpieces; however, add small colored roses and greenery to differentiate the centerpieces from the bouquet. Alternatively, hydrangeas or tulips in pastel-colored buckets make eye-catching spring centerpieces for a Mother's Day brunch.

Summer Flowers

Flowers in vivid hues are aplenty during the summer months. Featuring these colorful flowers in your centerpieces is a compliment to the season. Casual summer flowers that are long-lasting when cut include Gerber daisies, which come in pink, peach, red and yellow, and irises, while elegant flowers include white calla lilies, white roses and lavender. Use several flowers of coordinating colors as well as green foliage for added depth to create your centerpiece.

Holiday

An Advent wreath is a staple holiday decoration in many homes during the Christmas season. These wreaths generally consist of green foliage, such as holly or ivy leaves, arranged in a circle or inserted into a circular foam wreath. Red or white flowers incorporated into the wreath add a certain festive quality to the centerpiece. Some flowers to consider for a striking holiday centerpiece include the red-and-white amaryllis, which has flowers resembling candy canes, red or white roses, and deep red carnations.

Artificial Flowers

Some centerpieces may have special significance, meaning that you may want to use them year after year. For these occasions, creating a centerpiece with artificial flowers is one of the best ways to preserve the showpiece. For example, small artificial glitter-tipped poinsettias are just right for the holiday season. Additionally, some craft stores or flower shops sell delicate silk flowers for do-it-yourself centerpieces, whether the occasion is a wedding, special dinner or holiday celebration. Exotic flowers, such as orchids, that may not be readily available fresh are obtainable in silk and can easily arranged in a vase.
