Butcher block counters are a beautiful addition to any kitchen. Like all wood kitchen products, they should be sealed before their first use and they may need re-sealing as you use them. Fortunately, sealing a butcher block counter is a simple process, which can be done in less than a day. Once the process is complete, your butcher block will be safe from stains and spills.
Instructions
- 1
Determine if the butcher block is consistently smooth by running your hand across the surface. If you detect an uneven spot or roughness, use 30- grit sandpaper to sand out the imperfection.
2Mix equal amounts of mineral spirits and mineral oil into a bowl or small bucket.
3Dip a clean, soft cloth into the mineral oil mixture. Allow the cloth to become completely saturated.
4Wipe the oil mixture on the wood, working with the grain, until the entire area is covered.
5Allow the oil mixture to absorb into the butcher block for about an hour.
6Reapply coats of the mineral oil mixture until the butcher block counter will no longer absorb the oil.
7Wipe away the excess oil from the counter using a dry, clean cloth.
8Allow the wood to dry overnight before using.
