How to Seal a Butcher Block Counter

Butcher block counters are a beautiful addition to any kitchen. Like all wood kitchen products, they should be sealed before their first use and they may need re-sealing as you use them. Fortunately, sealing a butcher block counter is a simple process, which can be done in less than a day. Once the process is complete, your butcher block will be safe from stains and spills.

Instructions

    1

Determine if the butcher block is consistently smooth by running your hand across the surface. If you detect an uneven spot or roughness, use 30- grit sandpaper to sand out the imperfection.

    2

Mix equal amounts of mineral spirits and mineral oil into a bowl or small bucket.

    3

Dip a clean, soft cloth into the mineral oil mixture. Allow the cloth to become completely saturated.

    4

Wipe the oil mixture on the wood, working with the grain, until the entire area is covered.

    5

Allow the oil mixture to absorb into the butcher block for about an hour.

    6

Reapply coats of the mineral oil mixture until the butcher block counter will no longer absorb the oil.

    7

Wipe away the excess oil from the counter using a dry, clean cloth.

    8

Allow the wood to dry overnight before using.
