How to Refinish Plastic Garden Chairs

How to Refinish Plastic Garden Chairs

Plastic garden chairs are made of polyolefin resin, a very slick, nonporous material that is not conducive to paint adhesion. If you attempt to refinish an exterior plastic chair with ordinary acrylic, latex or oil-based paint, heavy shedding will ultimately ensue. Fortunately, there is a type of paint specifically formulated to bond to plastic resin surfaces. Before you begin the application process, know the proper way to prepare the chair, or you will end up with an unattractive, flawed finish.

Instructions

    1

Wipe the plastic chair with an ammonia-based cleanser. Use paint thinner if the chair is brand new. Wait two to four hours for the plastic chair to dry.

    2

Cover areas of the chair you do not want painted with professional blue painter's tape.

    3

Move the plastic chair to a ventilated area and place it on a fabric drop cloth.

    4

Shake the Krylon Fusion for a minimum of two minutes. Apply several light coats to the plastic chair, maintaining a distance of 8 inches between the plastic and the spray nozzle as you apply. Wait one hour between coats. Stop painting when the plastic is completely covered.

    5

Remove the painter's tape immediately after you have applied the final coat. Wait a minimum of one hour to handle the plastic chair.
