How to Paint a Coffee Table With a Feather Duster

If you have an old coffee table you were going to get rid of, you can paint it with a feather duster and make it look like new. Using a feather duster to paint your coffee table will give it an artistic design with various shapes and strokes. A feather duster will give a similar design finish as the sponging method in painting. If you're looking for a unique and innovative way to spruce up your coffee table, using a feather duster can add the extra spark you've been looking for. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Selecting the Paint

    1

Decide what color paints you want to use for the coffee table. The type of design a feather duster makes requires two colors, one for the background and one for the feather duster design. Choose two similar colors, with one darker and the other lighter, or two drastically different colors such as a white background with red design created by the feather duster.

    2

Purchase the background paint (typically lighter) in a flat or satin finish and the accenting color in a semi- to high-gloss paint. This will give the design an elevated and popping effect on the coffee table.

    3

Choose a paint that is designed for furniture with a hard enamel so it can withstand a lot of traffic and use. Do not use oil-based paints because they are difficult to work with and will not give you the same effect.

Painting the Coffee Table

    4

Lay a drop cloth on the floor where you are going to paint the coffee table. Place the coffee table on the drop cloth.

    5

Pour the base paint into a paint tray and use a brush to paint the background color. Allow to dry and apply a second coat if the original color of the table bleeds through. Allow to dry.

    6

Pour the secondary, accent color into the paint tray. Dip the feather duster into the paint so the paint is on the tips of the feathers. Do not saturate the duster. Use a piece of cardboard or paper to practice on to decide what type of design you want.

    7

Apply the feather duster with paint to the coffee table by barely touching down on the background. This will give a speckled and artistic look. You can use more than one color for added depth and color.
