With the wide variety of woods available, making different butcher block projects has become very popular. Woodworkers can choose the classic tone-on-tone style of butcher block, or create new designs with exotic-colored woods. There are projects available for every skill level, and most can be modified for creativity.
Cutting Board
Cutting boards are the best project to start with for beginners, as they are relatively small and easy to manage. The butcher block cutting board is made up of a number of pieces of lumber that are bonded tightly together to form one solid surface. By using woods of different colors, a unique item can be created. An advantage to wood cutting boards is that they will not harm knives like hard plastic or glass cutting boards will. They are also easy to maintain with a little bit of mineral oil once a month.
Kitchen Island Cart
The idea of combining work spaces in the kitchen is not a new one, but is one that has not been as popular in recent times. The trend toward custom cabinetry, however, is making combinations like the butcher block/kitchen cart a good choice for kitchen projects. The top of the cart is a butcher block cutting surface, and under this is storage. The nice part about it being a custom piece is that the storage underneath can be as much or as little as desired. This could be drawers, shelves or cubby-holes. If mobility is not as much of a concern as an immovable island, the casters are optional. Either way, this project is good for taking advantage of the space available.
Butcher Block Bench
Take the beauty of butcher block outside and add a bench to the patio or deck. This seating will add a personal touch to outdoor decorating while being useful as well. While the wood undergoes more sealing than it would with a piece that is created for indoor cooking use, the idea is the same. Butcher block benches are a solid addition for people who can withstand much of what mother nature--and kids--can dish out.
