Asian Decorating Ideas

There are several divergent trends in Asian decor. Some people opt for the bold patterns and colors of India, while others prefer to cooler look of Japanese modernism. There is also the Japanese trend in garden architecture and the contemporary Chinese preference for black lacquer and bold red. There are also Asian fusion styles which use complementary elements from various trends in the region. Does this Spark an idea?

Simplicity

Many Asian interiors draw upon the Japanese concept of "sabi," a philosophy that embraces a chic simplicity. Interiors that create this feeling have hidden storage for keeping clutter out of sight, clean lines, little ornamentation and a convergence of contrasting features that evoke ying/yang. You might use a wide bowl to float a single blossom in water, set a textured tatami mat against a smooth surface, put a basic white candle inside an ornamental lantern, or place smooth stones in a sand garden.

Use Texture

Your interior may feature complementary earth tones, creams, whites and touches of green, gold or red, but another way to add visual contrast is through texture. Place sleek green plants in earthenware pots. Use furnishings and accessories that feature elements of wood, bamboo, stone, paper, ceramics or straw, such as Shoji screens and baskets. Sleek lacquered dishes and decorative pieces look bold on an open shelf that has a distressed finish. Combine large baskets that feature different styles of weaving and different materials.

Incorporate Nature

Much of Asian design celebrates the beauty of the natural world. Translucent textiles and screens permit natural light to seep into rooms. Gardens are important not just for their outdoor setting but also for the views you can have of them from interior spaces. Extend the green theme inside with stalks of bamboo, green plants, blossoming flowers in vases, a windowsill rock garden or a small fountain. Create a spot for sitting and dining on the porch with cushions, a low table and candles for lighting.

Asian Fusion

Pan-Asian style is a wonderful way to mix your favorite elements from diverse traditions. Create a stylish interior with an Indonesian coffee table that features panels with cutouts or engravings, sometimes with mosaic tile tabletops. Hang Japanese parasols and Chinese paper lanterns as art. A Chinese scroll painting or Tibetan wall art adds visual pop.
