How to Treat a Butcher Block Counter

A butcher block counter adds a note of distinction to your kitchen, but it is not as easy to care for as laminate, stone or tile. Still, a few simple steps will keep your butcher block counter looking like new. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Caring for Your Butcher Block Counter

    1

Clean your countertop. Unlike butcher block cutting boards, your countertop has been sealed to protect it from water damage under normal daily use. To clean it, use a sponge or dishcloth with warm water and dish detergent just as you would a regular countertop. After cleaning, dry it well with a towel. Do not let water stand on the counter. Even though it has been sealed, you still run the risk of water damage.

    2

Condition your countertop. Once a month, rub gently warmed, but not hot, beeswax or mineral oil into the countertop to hydrate it. Vegetable oil should not be used, because it can become rancid. Let the wax or oil sit for at least an hour before wiping off the excess with a soft towel.

    3

Repair your countertop. If your countertop is not oiled regularly, it will start to dry out and cracks may appear. If this happens, fill the cracks with wood filler, and sand until smooth. Then coat the entire counter with mineral oil to hydrate it. Let it sit for an hour before wiping it off.

If your countertop becomes stained, rub the stain with fine steel wool or sandpaper and re-oil.

    4

Refinish your countertop. If your countertop sustains major damage, you should sand it down and refinish. If you are redoing the entire counter, use a pad or belt sander, being careful not to hold the sander in one place for too long. Wipe the dust away thoroughly, and then reapply warm mineral oil. Let stand for an hour, and then wipe away the excess.
