How to Treat a New Butcher Block

How to Treat a New Butcher Block

A butcher block plays an integral part in any busy kitchen. Use it as a base for chopping, dicing and slicing. When it's properly cared for, a butcher block can last for generations, as evidenced by some that are available in antique shops. Cleaning and treating a new butcher block is simple process that requires only a few things. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Clean a butcher block with a metal scraper. You can use a good-quality metal paint scraper. Scrape towards yourself, removing any food particles. Never immerse a butcher block in water.

    2

Wipe the butcher block clean with paper towels after scraping.

    3

Pour a small pool of mineral oil in the center of the butcher block. Use a soft cloth to rub the oil into the wood, including the sides. The wood should absorb the oil and look moist after treatment. Oil a new block before using it for the first time.

    4

Oil the block once a week if you use it daily. This prevents the grain of the wood from opening and harboring bacteria.
