Treat a New Butcher Block With Oil
New butcher block requires seasoning so the wood doesn't absorb bacteria or stains. The easiest way to season butcher block is to wipe the surface with a USP-grade mineral oil. Warm the oil and apply it with a soft cloth working with the direction of the grain. Allow the oil to sink into the surface. Apply four to five coats until the block no longer absorbs the oil. Vegetable oil or olive oil should not be used as it can turn rancid and cause the wood to smell.
Beeswax Can Also Be Used
Another method is to melt one-half teaspoon of beeswax with a cup of mineral oil and apply this to the surface. The beeswax gives the block a harder finish and helps to make it water-resistant. A top-coat of beeswax is an optional treatment. Instead of being absorbed into the wood like oil, it fills in the spaces and pores.
Apply the paste-like beeswax with a soft cloth and allow it to dry. Finish by buffing the surface for a nice shine.
Bottom Line
A new butcher block should be seasoned before using. Whether you use oils or beeswax or a combination of the two, a properly seasoned and maintained butcher block will remain safe to use and will last many years.
