A lack of space shouldn't restrict how you use your living room. Even the smallest living room should be spacious enough to allow you to entertain and relax. The trick is knowing how to select and arrange your furnishings. A cozy living room that's expertly furnished and arranged will be the envy of all your guests. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Decorate with the size of your living room in mind. Choose furnishings with straight lines and very little or no ornamentation. Select chairs and sofas without arms to keep furnishings pared down.
2Choose a focal point. This focal point can be the fireplace, if you have one, a work of art, a media center or something else that will attract the eye. It may even be a large window with a breath-taking view.
3Place the largest piece of furniture, generally a sofa, along a wall to keep it from taking up too much floor space. Arrange your other pieces so that won't interfere with movement in the room.
4Use all the space in your living room, including you walls. Walls aren't just for pictures. Hang shelves or add a bookcase to store and showcase your valuables and other possessions.
5Decorate your living room with acrylic tables. These slender pieces blend into the room. Use nesting tables so you can stack them out of the way when they're not in use.
6Choose items that serve two purposes to conserve space. A trunk that doubles as a coffee table offers storage. Use decorative boxes to hold small items.
7Place heavy or large objects across from each other to make your living room feel balanced. Place the sofa across from the media center, for example.
